Tara
Lumpkin, PhD, is a medical and environmental anthropologist, who
has worked and lived with people from other cultures in Africa,
Asia, Central America, South America, and North America for over
twenty-five years. This has allowed her to learn about the many
ways that people heal and become well.
Tara spent over a year in Namibia,
Africa, working with traditional healers and community members
under the auspices of the Namibian Ministry of Health and the
United Nations Children's Fund. During this time, she became particularly
interested in the relationship between healing, humans, animals,
and the environment.
In addition, she has studied
nature awareness, outdoor survival skills, nature philosophy,
and healing with Tom Brown, Jr., founder of the Tracker School.
Later she attended courses in shamanism at the Foundation for
Shamanic Studies.
Tara has worked in post-genocide
Rwanda for the United States Agency for International Development
aiding in the creation of an ethno-justice system. She then returned
to Rwanda to work with genocide orphans on a photography project
to help the children cope with the trauma they had experienced.
The children's photographs have been exhibited worldwide.
Currently she is the president of Perception, a non-profit with
numerous global projects.
Her training in Somatic Experiencing is with the Foundation for
Human Enrichment. |

Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing is an awareness-based
approach to healing both the psyche and physical body by getting in touch with our inner-nature. Most of us have experienced
challenging emotional or physical episodes in our lives. Such
events can be as “simple” as a sports injury, as “complex”
as years of childhood abuse, or as “severe” as post
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some examples of difficult experiences
are: surgery, accidents, dysfunctional childhoods, domestic violence,
war, and natural disasters.
As adults and children we may not even register
an event as something that will negatively affect us at a future
date. Many of the symptoms take years to appear and when they
do we may not connect them with any particular experience itself.
Nevertheless, these negative experiences become locked in our
nervous systems and the neural network pathways of our brains.
Children, in particular, are vulnerable to negative experiences
that might appear minor to an adult.
Somatic Experiencing allows us to touch
difficult experiences and access the physical and emotional sensations
around them. Once we have opened ourselves to these sensations,
they are released and, in this process, we are healed.

The Process
Although it may be helpful to talk briefly
about an event or symptoms, this is not psychotherapy or "talk
therapy." You do not tell your story or "relive"
the traumatic event. Nor do you have to remember any traumatic
event. We will work with patterns in the body and with the nervous
system's reaction to perceived threat to begin healing.
You will be asked to sit in a chair facing
the practitioner. Initially, we will concentrate on building
"resources." Resources are what make you feel safe,
energized, alive, and happy.
When you are in a resourced place, we
will gently approach past patterns, symptoms and trauma through
methods developed by Somatic Experiencing. You will be coached
to pay attention to your internal sensations and experiences.
There is often a physical sensation of trembling and emotional
release, which is the "discharge" of energy from the
nervous system that was frozen in the body during the actual
trauma.
You may feel tired and need to rest following
your session, which will allow your nervous system to recover.
Testimonials
My Somatic Experiencing sessions with
Dr. Lumpkin have been effective in helping me to release old
traumatic patterns and layers of fear, resulting in new perspectives
and positive changes in my life. Dr. Lumpkin is a compassionate,
intelligent, and creative Somatic Experiencing practitioner
who draws on both her logical and intuitive faculties to facilitate
sessions with clear outcomes.
Debra, Certified Healing Touch
Practitioner
I am very impressed with Somatic Experiencing and with Dr. Lumpkin’s
expertise. In one session I was able to recognize a key turning
point in my life that I had not been aware of before. This insight
allowed me to see how and why certain patterns had played out
over the next two decades and to learn from that realization.
I believe this methodology could be very useful for people who
want to strengthen their abilities and focus their talents more effectively.
In addition, I believe it could be helpful to people affected
by emergencies in the United States and in developing countries.
Phillip, United Nations Consultant
Somatic Experiencing with Dr. Lumpkin is practical, integrative,
and transformative. She brings a keen intellect and subtle perception
to bear on the issue of trauma. I felt lighter and more joyful;
the results last.
Michele, Creative Writer &
Ski Instructor
My Somatic Experiencing session with Dr. Lumpkin was very helpful.
I was visiting Taos for a short time and had a session with
Dr. Lumpkin. I wish I could have had more. She was able to bring
things out in me that I didn’t know were there. I am still
feeling much more relaxed and content. The process was gentle,
and she seemed to know exactly what was going on in my mind
and body. I feel fortunate to have had the SE session with her.
